FES for Horses

FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation)

FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) uses a computer generated signal to produce a muscle contraction. Because the signal is very similar to the signal the brain would send to cause a muscle contraction, it is a very well tolerated and powerful neuromuscular rehabilitation tool. The signal ensures the muscle groups are working evenly, making it a great option for horses who are weak or asymmetric in their movement or muscling. It is permitted as a treatment at FEI competition and can be used as part of warm up or recovery.

FES is excellent for:

  • Horses with stiff or weak toplines

  • Horses needing to build or maintain muscle mass, such as when recovering from injury or on stall rest

  • Horses with neck or back pain

  • Horses with asymmetrical movement patterns
